Urban Chicken Adventure: Getting Started with Backyard Chickens

What Led to Chickens?

In Chronological Order:

1. Big existing coop in backyard. Sat idle for years. Idea of getting chickens seemed ridiculous, if only because of the dog.

2. Friend of a friend has chickens and gave us fresh eggs a few times. Delicious.

3. Interest in gardening and "slow food" movement.

4. Subliminal Portland brainwashing (just a guess).

5. Reading Martha Stewart's Gardening Month by Month last winter. Lots of chicken glorification.

6. We toured a Waldorf preschool that had chickens and rabbits in the yard. Thought it would be so great for Nora to be exposed to where food comes from. Visions of her collecting eggs.

7. Deciding factor: article in the New Yorker by Susan Orlean. She talks about what made her get chickens and how easy and fun they are to keep. It made chickens attainable. Read it here.
